Upholstered bed: how to choose the size, fabric, and headboard

When choosing an upholstered bed, start with a tape measure. Its padded headboard and upholstered frame take up more space than a standard bed base, and the fabric does not age the same way in a very sunny bedroom or one shared with a cat. Here are the points to check before ordering, illustrated with models from our bed collection.

Upholstered, padded, channeled: what are we talking about?

An upholstered bed features a frame and headboard lined with foam and covered in fabric. A bed is called "button-tufted" or "upholstered" when this padding is stitched at regular intervals to create a relief effect:

  • button-tufted diamonds, the classic Chesterfield effect, as seen on the Royal bed in cognac velvet;
  • vertical channels, which are more understated, on the Royal Curve in corduroy;
  • stitched squares, similar to a hotel headboard, on the Hotel Signature;
  • bubbles or rounded rolls, on the UBBLE Lux Edition or the Cloud Bubble.

The pattern mainly changes the look of the bed. For everyday comfort, focus instead on the height of the headboard and the thickness of the padding.

Measure the footprint, not just the sleeping area

Sizes like 140 × 190, 160 × 200, or 180 × 200 cm refer to the mattress. The upholstered frame adds width, and the headboard adds length. Our blue upholstered bed with a curved headboard fits a 180 × 200 cm mattress but occupies 196 × 225 cm of floor space; the olive green model with an integrated headboard reaches 228 × 245 cm.

To move around and make the bed without bumping into anything, keep about 60 cm of clearance on each side and at the foot of the bed. Mark the full footprint on the floor with masking tape: it is the most reliable way to see if the room remains comfortable. Also check the height of the headboard in relation to windows, radiators, or wall outlets.

Choosing the height and shape of the headboard

If you read or watch screens in bed, the headboard should rise well above the pillows to serve as a backrest. A height of about 100 cm, like that of the Eclisse Royal, is sufficient for leaning back. Taller models dress the entire wall: about 115 cm for the Opulence Tactile bed in terracotta bouclé, and about 145 cm for the Hotel Signature.

Winged headboards, like those on the Royal or the Royal Wing, create a cocoon effect but require extra width: check that there is still room for bedside tables. Other models have integrated bedside tables, like the Cocoon or the Executive Comfort, or built-in reading lights and outlets, like the Urban Prestige—meaning fewer pieces of furniture and lamps to place around the bed.

Which fabric for an upholstered bed?

Velvet catches the light and emphasizes the relief of the tufting. It may hold impressions for a while and requires gentle brushing from time to time. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, which can fade deep colors.

Corduroy, used on the Royal Curve, adds its own lines to the tufting and creates a more retro feel. It is maintained just like velvet.

Bouclé (or loop fabric) is thick and very soft; it highlights rounded shapes. Its loops can snag on animal claws, jewelry, or zippers.

Faux leather can be wiped down with a damp sponge: it is the simplest option for daily use, for example in a guest room or a rental property. Keep it away from radiators, as direct heat can damage it.

Leather develops a patina over time. Nourish it once or twice a year with a suitable product.

If you are sensitive to dust, smooth surfaces (faux leather, leather) trap less of it than fabrics with pile or loops.

Storage, lighting: useful options

In a small bedroom, a storage compartment under the bed base replaces a dresser. On the Lux Storage, the base lifts using gas struts that prevent you from having to lift the weight of the mattress; the Bubble in dusty pink bouclé offers three drawers at the front. LED strips placed under the frame, on the Aura Light, the Essential Comfort, or the Royal Curve, provide ambient lighting that is practical for getting up at night without turning on the ceiling light.

Care: the right habits

  • Vacuum with a soft brush attachment once a week, focusing on the crevices of the tufting where dust accumulates.
  • Treat stains immediately by blotting with a slightly damp white cloth, without rubbing.
  • Before using any product, test it on a hidden area.
  • Keep the headboard away from radiators and direct sunlight.

Delivery: anticipate the path

An upholstered bed is heavy and bulky: our blue upholstered bed weighs 70 kg, the olive green model 97 kg. Measure doors, hallways, stairwells, and elevators before ordering. Allow 21 to 56 days between ordering and delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What size upholstered bed for a 10 m² room?

In a room of about 3 × 3.3 m, a 140 × 190 or 160 × 200 cm sleeping area remains comfortable if the frame does not exceed 180 cm in width and 220 cm in length: this leaves 60 cm of clearance on each side. Models with 180 or 200 cm sleeping widths require a room of 12 to 14 m².

Is it necessary to buy an additional bed base?

Many of our beds incorporate their own support: slatted base, upholstered box spring, or storage base. Check each product page for the type of support and the intended mattress size.

Can I choose a different color?

Some models are available in several colors, which are indicated on their product pages. For special requests, please write to us at contact@maisoncorleone.com before ordering.
